American Tour de Sol
The American Tour de Sol existed and I’m tired of pretending that it didn’t.
From 1989 to 2006 teams of students, companies, and individuals from around the world came together once a year to show the potential of electric and alternative-fueled vehicles. The event ran with a ton of volunteer assistance and funding from a few public agencies, but sadly it could no longer continue when the funding began to disappear.
This page is a pile of “research” to collect up evidence to share with folks, someday I might fix up the Wikipedia page that made me mad enough to start this project.
This is mostly a pile of links organized into a timeline so far, someday I may try to include the additional information and personal anecdotes that I have in my collection.

Special Thanks
- We must absolutely thank Michael H. Bianchi, who chronicled the Tour de Sol from 1994 through 2006, without whom much of the history of this event would have been perminantly lost. His reports can be found at the Tour de Sol Reports and linked throughout this page.
- I’d also like to thank my parents, Michael and Patricia Skelly, who took their kids every year on an adventure to try and change the world.
